Volvo CE VR

Volvo Construction Equipment is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction machines. With a full product range manufactured, serviced and supported all over the globe. Each and every machine comes with the quality, performance and safety you expect from the Volvo name.

The Project

Following the success of the Volvo CE Insider app and interactive Customer Kiosk, we were recently commissioned to build a new app to provide a full 360 degree virtual reality video experience of key Volvo CE products for iOS and Android mobile devices, plus an enhanced version for Oculus Rift.

Google Cardboard for iOS and Android

Targeting the ‘Google Cardboard’ platform, we designed and built an app that lets users choose a range of machines, leading them to a 360 degree video, which sits the user right in the cab as a co-pilot in the machine.

We placed various text and video 'callouts' around the cab, so that the users can interact to find out more information about specific aspects of the machine. The navigation and video is also displayed in 2D for those who don’t have a Google Cardboard headset.

Oculus Rift

Following great feedback from the initial version of the iOS and Android app, we were commissioned to design and build a higher resolution version for Oculus rift, with HD video, 3D sound effects and audio and a completely immersive Virtual Reality environment, which the users can experience while switching between the videos.

Digital hands allow the user to choose the videos suspended in a high-tech imagining of a quarry environment, which glide forward with custom sound effects when they’re selected.

The Result

The virtual reality experience and video and audio content was refined over numerous iterations, with direct interaction and feedback from Volvo Global this made for a fast-paced and dynamic project.

We added a hidden CMS within the VR environment (the first Virtual Reality CMS?!) which allows administrators to choose which videos will be displayed on each individual Oculus Rift PC, dragging the video thumbnails around the environment in 3D to place them as desired in the space.

Released on 7th March 2017 at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas, these VR experiences are an integral aspect of the Volvo CE show.
