Volvo CE Kiosk

Volvo Construction Equipment is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction machines. With a full product range manufactured, serviced and supported all over the globe. Each and every machine comes with the quality, performance and safety you expect from the Volvo name.

The Project

CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas happens every three years, and is the largest trade show in the construction industry. Volvo Construction Equipment has a very large presence at the show, and the company always aims to make an impact.

Having already proven ourselves with the design and build of a brand new iOS and Android app, which was being used by the sales staff, as well as being available in the relevant app stores for customers, Volvo asked us to re-design the user interface for large screens to create a version of the app to use at shows and events. This would work on an interactive touchscreen, and would include some new features that we’d develop specifically for the kiosk.

Pulling out the core functionality of the Volvo CE Insider app, we designed a new user interface that would take advantage of the large screen format. We needed to make it obvious that this was an interactive interface, as people would be walking past hundreds of display-only screens at the show, so we actively addressed that by adding some animation and key calls to action. We then built a new video wall that would let visitors browse various products and presentations.

The entire application can be managed remotely, through a custom version of our CMS that we created for the marketing team. Using the CMS, administrators can add new promotions and competitions, new images and pages, and roll out new versions of the kiosk software. Our custom installer means that the software could be managed and updated from the CMS, with no need for any manual changes to the kiosk machine itself.

The installer also made a good job of locking-down the kiosk machine, so that random visitors couldn’t close it down and start browsing the internet or YouTube during the show.

The Result

The kiosk software looked great and worked really well at the show, and we followed up the development with a complete design makeover when the new Volvo branding guidelines were released in 2016.

After the show, Volvo rolled out the software to the showrooms of dealerships all over North America. Each dealership can customise their version of the kiosk using an upgraded version of the CMS, adding local promotions and competitions, while global control is maintained by the main marketing team.
